AM BEAIRT (THE LOOM)
2016
Commissioned by An Lanntair, an arts centre in Stornoway (Lewis & Harris), Am Beairt is made from an old Hattersley Pedal Loom, acquired from the village of Balallan on the Isle of Lewis. For weavers of Harris Tweed it was the workhorse of the Industry throughout the 20th Century. It was disassembled, re-imagined and rebuilt to tell its own compelling story through a metaphor of regeneration. There is only one human figure – a weaver, a crofter, a wise old fellow whose relentless work supports the life of all his animals who populate the rest of the The Loom.
